Letter to the Minister of Finance, February 14, 2012

If you would like to express your concerns about this situation please contact the Ontario Horse Racing Industry Association at ohria@ohria.com.

Dear Minister Duncan-

I can't help but express my grave concerns over statements made by you yesterday. I am 52 years old and the horse business has been my only source of revenue since graduating from the University of Guelph in 1981.

At no point would I ever have thought of the slots at racetracks program as a "subsidy". The partnership that was created between government and the horse breeding and racing industry has been a model arrangement and is heralded throughout North America. 75% of revenues go to the provincial government, 5% to the municipalities and only 20% goes back to the horse business which is split between 3 breeds, 18 racetracks and countless horse owners and breeders. The monies that have been retained by the horse industry have resulted in dramatic investment within the province by both horse people and racetracks alike. If these monies don't find their way back to our industry there is no question that you will see the substantial growth and the associated economic benefit to the province quashed instantly.

Here is a rough example of my own investment just last year alone within the PROVINCE OF ONTARIO in 2011-

Veterinary care, trainer, assistant trainer, grooms, hot-walkers, hay and straw delivery, fencing, barn repair, University of Guelph (medical services), Milton Equine Clinic (medical services), stud fees, 2 farm mangers, 5 full time employees, 25 sales employees, tractor and equipment repairs, commissions, van companies, blacksmith, farm co-op, tack shop etc.

This is a small sample of what it takes for just 1 farm owner to be involved in the horse business in Ontario. There are a great many expenses not listed.

An attack on the slots program would be devastating to the rural economy. I would hope that more thought and a great deal of consultation would go in to any decision that has the potential to annihilate a business that supplies 60,000+ jobs to the Ontario economy.

Yours Sincerely,

R. Glenn Sikura

Hill ‘N’ Dale has 3 September sales colts from this exquisite family-ZENSATIONAL/DAIJIN, ZENSATIONAL/HANDPAINTED and STREET CRY/SERENADING.

Thursday March 15, 2012

Today was a sad day for Hill ‘N’ Dale as multiple graded stakes winner ANGUILLA passed away. ANGUILLA was a homebred by SEATTLE SLEW and was raced by Hill ‘N’ Dale prior to joining the broodmare band. ANGUILLA was among the top turf fillies in North America and was a shoo-in for Champion Turf Female in Canada in 1999 but caught a virus and couldn’t make her necessary 3rd start in the country for eligibility.

Thursday February 09, 2012

DIXIE STRIKE, Hill ‘N’ Dale sales grad (2010 CTHS Selected Yearling Sale), further stamped herself as an Oaks/Plate hopeful over the past weekend winning the $150,000 Florida Oaks. DIXIE STRIKE is a ½ sister to possible Champion INGLORIOUS and is trained by Mark Casse (who also bought her). Other horses purchased by Mark Casse from Hill ‘N’ Dale consignments include: RETRACEABLE (Princess Elizabeth winner), JAMBALAYA (G1 winner), TASTY TEMPTATION (multiple stakes winner, possible Champion)...

Tuesday February 07, 2012

Foal #2 arrived safe and sound! Entitled, another Hill ‘N’ Dale Kentucky mare had a lovely grey filly by first year sire CONCORD POINT (stands at Hill ‘N’ Dale Kentucky).

Tuesday January 31, 2012

The first foal of the year arrived today. Compassionate, owned by Hill ‘N’ Dale Kentucky had a robust colt by HARLINGTON. HARLINGTON is beautifully bred and was very talented. He is a young sire that has been heavily supported by Eugene Melnyk. For more information click on the Word format document above, “2012 Hill ‘N’ Dale Kentucky Stud Fees”.

Friday January 27, 2012

If you look at the January 24th posting it is easy to see why Hill ‘N’ Dale Canada has had a busy week booking 4 mares to STORMY ATLANTIC. If not the most versatile sire in North America, “STORMY” must be among the top couple. Dirt, turf, and poly-track: Champion 2 year-old sire in North America and sire of a G1 winning older horse in 2011 should be evidence enough.

Also sold this week were seasons in OSS Freshman sire MARCAVELLY, and Champion LEONNATUS ANTEAS. Both horses are accomplished on the racetrack and stand at John Burness’ Colebrook Farms: http://www.colebrookfarms.com/

Hill ‘N’ Dale would be pleased to talk to you about your sales needs (buying/selling).

Wednesday January 25, 2012

Jennifer Morrison, long-time writer within the thoroughbred industry (and a Sovereign Award winner for her prose), has placed “PRINCE RAPHAEL” as her #6 choice currently to win the 2012 Queen’s Plate. PRINCE RAPHAEL was foaled and raised at Hill ‘N’ Dale Canada for breeders Ossie and Christina Belle. The Belle’s purchased Prince Raphael’s dam through our sales agency a few years back (Debbie England trains). A win in the Queen’s Plate would be a well deserved honour for 2 of the most determined and nicest clients this farm has ever had.

DIXIE STRIKE who weighs in at #5 and Hampstead Heath who is ranked #8 are both graduates of our 2010 CTHS September consignment. Jen’s selections, can be viewed at the following address: http://www.horse-canada.com/thoroughblog/

Tuesday January 24, 2012

The 2011 Sovereign award finalists (the Canadian version of the Eclipse awards), were announced earlier today. Several of the nominees have ties to Hill ‘N’ Dale-

Farm Manager Ericka Rusnak is a finalist in the Best Photograph category for the picture seen below. Ericka captured her WHERE’S THE RING 2011 filly in “jump mode”. This filly is a half sister to 2011 stakes winner QUICK CODE (pedigree reference Hip #130 2011 CTHS Yearling Sale)-

Champion 2 year-old Male finalist MARITIMER is by Hill ‘N’ Dale Kentucky stallion STORMY ATLANTIC.

Champion 3 year-old Filly finalist INGLORIOUS is a graduate from our 2009 CTHS Yearling sales consignment.

Champion Older Female finalist EMBUR’S SONG is a graduate of the 2008 Hill ‘N’ Dale Keeneland September consignment.

Champion Turf Male finalist STORMY LORD is another potential Champion by STORMY ATLANTIC.

Champion Female Sprinter finalist EMBUR’S SONG (see above). Also nominated in this category is ATLANTIC HURRICANE who is out of a STORMY ATLANTIC mare.
