If you look at the January 24th posting it is easy to see why Hill ‘N’ Dale Canada has had a busy week booking 4 mares to STORMY ATLANTIC. If not the most versatile sire in North America, “STORMY” must be among the top couple. Dirt, turf, and poly-track: Champion 2 year-old sire in North America and sire of a G1 winning older horse in 2011 should be evidence enough.

Also sold this week were seasons in OSS Freshman sire MARCAVELLY, and Champion LEONNATUS ANTEAS. Both horses are accomplished on the racetrack and stand at John Burness’ Colebrook Farms: http://www.colebrookfarms.com/

For comparisons sake you can scroll down and see how the 2010 foal weights compared with the previous year. It should be noted that we do our weights via a “weight tape”. In our estimation the taping is usually about 3-5% below the actual weights.

We weigh our foals daily for the first 30 days and then monthly until they are sold (usually as yearlings). Even if the actual recorded birth weight is slightly less than it should be we can monitor weight gain effectively. The weights recorded below are the “taped weights” and have not been adjusted.

Avg. weight:109.45 lbs.

15 filly avg: 108.33 lbs.

SERENADING received a Sovereign Award this evening as Canada’s leading Older Filly or Mare. SERENADING’S full sister HANDPAINTED (A.P. INDY/DAIJIN by DEPUTY MINISTER) came within a vote of being Canada’s Champion 2 year-old filly a few years back. Grand dam PASSING MOOD was previously honoured as Canadian Broodmare of the Year.

The first foal arrived today (first of 53). A healthy 115 lb. colt by CANDY RIDE foaled for Hill ‘N’ Dale Kentucky.

A recent purchase is the stakes winning mare KLISSURA. A half sister to stakes winner SIWA and out of a beautifully bred STORM CAT mare, KLISSURA will be bred to Canadian Champion LEONNATUS ANTEAS.

Thursday November 26, 2009

In the last start of her career, SERENADING went out in style. The 5 year-old homebred miss is by A.P. INDY out of homebred DAIJIN (G1 S.P. in the Test S. at Saratoga). SERENADING was a comfortable 3 length winner in the Falls City H. G2 at Churchill Downs. Included in the field of the Falls City was G1 winner of nearly $2,000,000 UNBRIDLED BELLE. Several media outlets have suggested that SERENADING’s performance has placed her at the top of the list for Champion Older Mare in Canada. HANDPAINTED, SERENADING’s full sister, missed out on a Sovereign Award as a 2 year-old filly by just one point.

Wednesday November 18, 2009

Final preparations are underway for the CTHS Mixed Sale (November 28, 2009). Among the horses in our consignment are 2 prominent yearling colts - ROMAN RULER/Water Music by DANZIG and STORMY ATLANTIC/Iron Feather by CRAFTY PROSPECTOR. Also in the group are Can. G1 Winner BARBED WIRE (pregnant to SURVIVALIST) and Graded stakes producer SIDE VIEW (in foal to VIBANK).

Homebred graded stakes winner ANGUILLA - (SEATTLE SLEW Awesome Account by LYPHARD), is the dam of “Antiqued”.

There was no doubt in our minds that Antiqued was cut out to be a stakes horse. After 2 wins and 2 3rds in only 7 starts (all at the allowance level), he was retired from racing due to an ankle injury.

After rehabbing at the farm for a few months, “Long Run” retirement foundation found him a good home. Antiqued is now a successful show horse having captured another 2 gold medals over the weekend at a horse show in Quebec.

Long time friend/client Les Pereira watched his STORMY ATLANTIC mare SASKAWEA turn in a courageous performance while winning the ZADRACARTA S. at Woodbine on Sunday. After relinquishing the lead in deep stretch, SASKAWEA showed her bravery digging in and retaking the lead while winning in near course record time.

Today was a good day for the farm. Homebred SERENADING ran a very respectable 2nd in the Doubledogdare S. G3 at Keeneland-her first outing of the year. In 13 lifetime starts, SERENADING has been first, second or third 12 times.

Earlier in the day we delivered our 40th foal of the season when ZAYAT Stables mare FOSSA gave birth to a healthy filly. FOSSA is one of many fine mares that ZAYAT Stable is sending to freshman Ontario sire MARCAVELLY (Colebrook Stud Farm).

Meanwhile in Kentucky, G1 winner and G1 producer HALO AMERICA was scanned pregnant to leading sire STORMY ATLANTIC. HALO AMERICA is the only mare in the world with a 2009 STORM CAT colt!

Wednesday April 15, 2009

After thrusting himself into the Kentucky Derby picture earlier in the season, homebred stakes winner PATENA fell off of his form. Running out of the money in the Louisiana Derby and G1 Bluegrass S., it was discovered that he required minor surgery to remove bone chips in 3 ankles. PATENA has an excellent prognosis to go back to the track and perform at his best this fall.

FYI - The first 6 dams of PATENA are stakes winners!

The first stakes race for Canadian-bred 3 year-olds was run at Woodbine today. Hill ‘N’ Dale sales graduates ran 1st and 3rd in this major stepping stone for the $1,000,000 Queen’s Plate.

Winning the $150,000 Achievement Stakes was Jeff Begg’s homebred EL BRUJO (by some 8 ½ lengths). The son of CANDY RIDE was very impressive and warrants serious respect moving forward. The Begg family is already the breeder of 2 Queen’s Plate winners including G1 winner VICTOR COOLEY who ran in the family colors.

Sunday April 05, 2009

Earlier today Hill ‘N’ Dale Canada delivered its 8th 2009 foal by first year sire SEEKING THE BEST. The foals have been of substantial quality. Considering his race record and pedigree this is not unexpected.

PATENA Wins Display Stakes

Several years ago Hill 'N' Dale Farms had a dilemma. Because of a recent major transaction we had more stallion seasons than mares to breed them to. The solution was to sell as many seasons as possible and attempt to create some "foal sharing" arrangements with others. The result was entering into a multi year agreement with Holtsinger Inc. owners of the top broodmare PASSING MOOD.

For the Hill 'N' Dale/Holtsinger partnership, PASSING MOOD produced stakes winners - BAR U MOOD, TOUCH GOLD - G1 and DAIJIN.

DAIJIN had been offered for sale by our sales agency but we bought out the partnership when she failed to reach her sales reserve. Racing for Hill 'N' Dale, DAIJIN was a stakes winner at 3 winning the prestigious Selene S. (Can. G1) and then running 3rd in the Test G1 at Saratoga.

As a producer, DAIJIN has been very kind to us commercially. We have also been fortunate to keep 2 A.P. INDY daughters of DAIJIN. Named HANDPAINTED and SERENADING, these 2 fillies have went on to be stakes winners.

HANDPAINTED came very close to winning Championship honours at 2 in Canada and continued her winning ways as a multiple stakes winner at 4. SERENADING was a stakes winner at 4 this season and will run again next season with very high expectations.

How does PATENA fit in to the equation? He is a 2 year-old son of SEEKING THE GOLD and HANDPAINTED. After breaking his maiden by 5 1/4 lengths in his previous start, PATENA won the Dec. 06 Display S. ($150,000) at Woodbine Racetrack, representing the 6th stakes winner that we have bred or co-bred from this family.

"Oil Painting", a 2007 DISTORTED HUMOR filly out of HANDPAINTED, will be a part of our 2009 racing stable.

2009 STUD FEES ANNOUNCED

Hill 'N' Dale Kentucky has announced its schedule of stud fees for 2009. With the current state of the sales economy, the Kentucky farm has reacted responsibly by holding or reducing fees on all of the stallions that stood in 2008 and prior. Anybody who participated in the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale should appreciate this.

Perennial stalwarts such as - STORMY ATLANTIC, EL CORREDOR, THEATRICAL and MUTAKDDIM continue to perform at a high and consistent level.

Leading freshman sire of 2008 CANDY RIDE (with 2 GSW this year) will stand for $12,500- the same fee as previous years.

Several of the stallions have yet to have foals old enough to the races but that will change for some this year. Among the younger stallions at the farm are GRAND REWARD, ROMAN RULER, SEEKING THE BEST, CLOSING ARGUMENT and MR. SEKIGUCHI.

New to the roster for 2009 are-2 time Breeders cup Sprint winner MIDNIGHT LUTE (17 hands tall and beautiful), SEEEKING THE DIA (a Champion son of STORM CAT from a great European G1 winning mare), HARLINGTON (a great looking, stakes winning son of UNBRIDLED out of a Champion), HEATSEEKER (a multiple graded stakes winner and multiple course record setting millionaire by GIANT'S CAUSEWAY).

All fees are due 11/01 of year bred.

Due to the multiple number of seasons purchased by Hill 'N' Dale Farms Canada for ourselves and our many clients it may be possible to negotiate more favorable terms from time to time.

Give me a call or drop me an e-mail to discuss.

RETRACEABLE WINS PRINCESS ELIZABETH S.

How does a well bred, attractive filly sell for only $20,000 and then win a $250,000 stakes race the following year? It's simple-a top horseman with an open mind bought her. Mark Casse was the only horse person at Woodbine who could overlook a cosmetic blemish on RETRACEABLE and was rewarded today (11/01/08 ) when the 2 year-old daughter by leading first crop sire MEDAGLIA D'ORO galloped home a winner in one of Canada's premier races for juveniles. RETRACEABLE was unlucky not to have won the Muskoka S. in a previous start after being "steadied repeatedly". Selling from our Toronto Selected sales consignment in 2007, RETRACEABLE scared off most vets and prospective buyers due to a calcium deposit on a front ankle. Despite never being unsound a day in her life and despite having this cosmetic blemish since day 1, Mark was the only buyer to put up his hand. Seeing through what others won't and showing confidence in his own opinion has resulted in a bargain filly with tremendous upside.

P.S. This is the 3rd time in the last 5 years that a Hill 'N' Dale Toronto Sales grad has won the Princess Elizabeth S.

CTHS SEPTEMBER YEARLING SALE

The Toronto yearling sales held September 02 (Selected Sale) and September 06 (Preferred Sale) were more or less on par with the Sales 2007 results. A slight dip for the Selected Sale (both in average and median) and a very slight raise in prices in the Preferred. Ontario sired horses appeared to me to sell for a premium.

The Hill 'N' Dale consignment sold well in some instances and not so well in other cases. What I am sure of is that we sold some nice horses and they will push us over the 100 mark for Toronto sales grads that have won or placed in stakes races. Retraceable, a very troubled 2nd in the $125,000 Muskoka S. was bred and sold by Hill 'N' Dale and represented our 96th Toronto stakes graduate.
